The Environment Division of the Department of Commerce comprises two agencies with the primary task of managing and protecting coastal resources for the Territory of American Samoa. The American Samoa Coastal Management Program and Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary Program are federally approved programs in partnership with the local government via agreement with National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration/National Ocean Service.
Mission Statement of the Environment Division
To provide effective resource management to protect, maintain, restore, and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Coastal Zone.
Environment Division Focus
The Environment Division houses several important functions within the Department of Commerce such as the following: program emphasis under the American Samoa Coastal Management Program; the Project Notification Review System (PNRS) which is the land use permitting process for the Territory; community-based wetlands management; cumulative and secondary impacts development; non-point source pollution; ocean resource management; and public education. The Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary Program’s primary focus is coral protection, education and outreach, scientific research and coral reef monitoring.
